A few nights ago my TrueNAS server started making some real funny noises. Well turned out the Pump on its water cooler sprung a leak. it fried the box. I decided to build a new one, with new drives. But alas I couldn’t figure out a way to rebuild my raid array, and get the data to the new pools on the new NAS. So I pulled apart our home surveillance 1u out of my home lab, Installed truenas on my portable SSD, and rebuilt the array using it. The transfers took a few days, but I didn’t lose anything! That’s when I fully learned the meaning of the Phrase: “If it ain’t offline, it ain’t a backup”
Now I make hard backups.
